24-hour plan

Plan the next day, not the whole year.

A person writing in a notebook at a small table, with a sun and moon above showing one day.

Write one day only. Sleep, food, one meeting if you want one, one person you can contact, and one thing you will do if an urge hits.

If the day includes danger, the plan is call 000.

Tomorrow can have its own plan. This one expires.

Where this comes from

Planning one day at a time comes from mutual-help groups. Alcoholics Anonymous describes a 24-hour plan in its booklet Living Sober: stay sober just for this day, and break the day into hours if you need to.

Why it can help

A whole lifetime can feel too big. One day is a size most people can manage, and a small plan made ahead of time (sleep, food, one person, one thing to do if an urge hits) means fewer decisions in a hard moment. This is practical wisdom from people in recovery more than a tested treatment.

For any health concern, talk to your GP or a doctor. HomeCircle is support, not medical care.
